Pict Convert ArtDL Trilogy I:Files:Art:Art Tools:Pict Convert 0 70K 11/10/93 Pict Convert - Pict Convert is a program for converting Pict's to GIF format. The GIF viewers I've seen don't support AppleEvents, so I needed to come up with a way around that. PictConvert does just that by taking a folder (or alias to a folder or volume) called "Target Dir", scanning it for .pict or .PICT files, and lauching "TargetApp" with them. After Target App opens, Pict Convert "types" a Command-S, the file name, the enter key and a Command-Q, which gets received by the GIFviewer. (Obviously, this only works with viewers that default to saving as a .GIF) After the viewer quits, Pict Convert deletes the original PICT file and goes on to look for the next... A great timesaver for converting those files!

The original version of the program was a desk accessory, but as desk accessories are less powerful than regular applications and can be awkward to use, I’ve expanded it into a full application program for use in the background under MultiFinder or System 7. There are a lot of uses for this little program, ranging from magnifying displays in a drawing program for extra precision, to enlarging small text to aid the vision-impaired, to just playing around. Hopefully, this new version will be even more useful to an even larger group of people.

Giffer is an image display program for the Macintosh II family of computers. It works best in 256 color (8-bit) mode, but will work in 16 color (4-bit), 4 color (2-bit) and 2 color (1-bit) modes as well. Giffer also works in 24-bit mode, but 24-bit images will not be displayed in full color (they will be dithered to 256 colors). (GIF currently does not support 24 bits of color, so there would be no way to save a 24-bit images in GIF.) It is a memory-intensive program, so it's nice to have as much memory as you can get to run it. However, it will run with the standard 1 Meg. Giffer was written as a utility to display images stored in GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format.

I have made the side margins narrow so as to accommodate thermal printers such as QMS, Oce’, etc. I found after much and very costly trial and error, that it is very difficult if not impossible to accurately predict what the color will look like when outputed by your local service bureau. This is even more complicated when combining scanned color images with spot color elements. I have developed a technique that seems to save the many iterations necessary to get what the color you want. Read the docs for more information on color calibration.

Useful where size is an important consideration, e.g. when composing descriptions of files to upload to CompuServe, pasting large pictures, etc. There are several ways to install the FKEY, depending on how you organise your disk. You can use Suitcase or MasterJuggler to open the FKEY file, or if you prefer you can use a FKEY moving utility (such as the FKEY Manager) to copy it into a large FKEY file, or the System file. You could also use ResEdit to copy the FKEY resource into your System file. The default for this F-Key is cmd-shift-7 (can be reassigned).

This gorgeous image was modeled and rendered by Steve Speer using Sculpt 3D from Byte by Byte Corporation. The motorcycle (or "hog" if you prefer) is extremely detailed and realistic, with dozens if not hundreds of parts, yet Mr. Speer constructed it all in under a day. The image was raytraced at 2,048 x 1,536 resolution in under 2 hours on a Quadra 900 with a YARC coprocessor. Would've been faster if not for the bump map, too. This image is QuickTime JPEG compressed; you can view it with TeachText or any other PICT viewer.

What you got here is a nifty 512x384 pixel image (great for 12" startups) of a "comment" on the nature of today's computer person. Like me. 32 bit quickdraw picture. No kidding. Lettering modeled and ray-traced in Specular Infini-D 2.0 I could list the fonts used, but I doubt anyone would be particularly interested. The hex code in the background was taken from a screen snapshot in Norton Disk Editor. Manipulated, recolored, and pasted into the text with Adobe Photoshop. This was all painstakingly slow since all I've got is an LC (LC 1 to avoid confusion with the two new ones).

I scanned this mess, and cleaned it up using scanning software and MacPaint. I'm surprised the end result looks as good as it does.

This image was created using 2 of Sculpt's unique tools: Subdivide, which doubles the resolution of a surface, and Randomize, which provides controlled, yet random, perturbation of the surface. This model took a good five minutes to construct, not including the time required to make the color map in Photoshop. It's not suitable for framing; it's just a demonstration piece.

I couldn't quite believe how all the screen grabbing utilities always stopped working every time a new version of System software or a new machine came out. So, thinking to myself "how hard can it be?" I wrote the UltraGrabber FKEY. It has two basic "modes," one is the standard crosshair cursor, where you drag out the rectangle of the area you want to grab. That area of the screen is instantly placed in the clipboard as a PICT. I got the idea from an old Saturday Night Live commercial. In it the final scene pictures a backwards Apple logo with the colors rearranged. The logo I made is about as close to Apple's colors without breaking their copyright protection, but Microsoft probably will get away with breaking other Apple copyright, so I'm not worried! ;-) Hope you like it.
